You Have To Be Kidding!
Here’s an idea that draws quizzical looks from Americans, and from many Haitians in the United States: let’s feature a profile of Detroit’s Haitian community as part of this website. Detroit’s Haitian community? Really? You’ve got to be kidding!

Don’t be fooled. The Haitian Diaspora in Detroit is alive and well, even though it is much smaller in numbers than the usual places we think of, like the metropolitan areas around New York and Miami. You just have to know where to look and Detroit’s Haitians are there!

They strive to maintain their Haitian identity despite their small size. Also, they make their voice larger by joining forces with others from the Caribbean when the occasion is right. This strategy of partnership has helped this small Haitian community achieve a role of insiders in city and corporate boardrooms, as opposed to outsiders shouting at the steps of city hall. Finally, Detroit’s Haitians extend their boundaries from time to time beyond their city to link with Haitians located elsewhere in Michigan, particularly in the nearby cities of Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Lansing.
