Haitians in the Detroit area are not located in any single
neighborhood or part of the city. The greatest concentration of
Haitian families, however, is in Northwest Detroit, within an area
bounded by Telegraph Road, the Southfield Freeway, 5 Mile Road and
8 Mile Road. Located within this general area is St. Gerard’s,
one of two Roman Catholic churches attended by Detroit’s Haitians.
Sacred Heart, the other, is located closer to downtown Detroit.
Also not far from downtown, on Ferry Street in Detroit’s museum
district near Wayne State University, is another key institution
of the Haitian community, the Espoir Center for Caribbean Arts and
Culture.
